Gammarelli specializes in making ecclesiastical garments and is the official and exclusive supplier to the popes. When the pope appoints new cardinals, a purple outfit is made for each of them. It is for this use that the famous red socks were made. Hence the commonly accepted nickname "the Pope’s socks," although the color of socks worn by the Pope is white.
